Skulls and stuff

Long time no see...

I wasn't drawing much lately.
I have filled up 12 pages in my sketchbook since 1st July, made few attempts on digital drawing (results of which you'll probably see at the end of the month), but it isn't something I would call drawing.

BUT

Finally got something more decent than the Ace II camera. Don't expect anything that's even close to professional level 'tho.

That's an overly-instagramish caricature of photo. I mean it. I think I put on that photo every filter that I've ever seen on Instagram.

It's a skull. Drawn from imagination, but I think I could have seen that somewhere... Not sure though.

I may be posting more sketches from my sketchbook in future.

Monthly scraps - June

1st day of the month - scraps time!
Stuff I would trash if not for the blog. Everyone has bad days, and those are mine:

These are from 1st week of my "anatomy June". Rather rough ideas than sketches.

I think I've learned a lot since then. Most of the work, that you won't see, I do in my sketchbook because, as I mentioned several times on this blog already, the pressure sensitivity on my tablet is dead and it kills my motivation and wrist too.

If I was to joke about it, I would say that being dead is quite contagious - but I won't :D

That's that children book cover thingy. Last month it looked like THAT (click :D ) so there's some progress.
Not much, but it counts, is it?

I suck at colours, environments, water and wet stuff. That's my attempt on those subjects, and at least I know what not to do.
These are not illustrations. When I was drawing them, they were taking as much screen space as medium-sized Windows thumbnail for images.

It's not about details. If something is off in the picture of that size, it will be even more prominent if you scale that picture up.

Since I can't make it work this big, there's no need for bringing up the details. Not for my learning curve at least.
I'll make that work 'tho. Sooner or later.

Some anatomy practice

3/4 back view. Nothing fancy but drawing that helped me to memorise all these muscles.

And here you have entire process.

The thing is: you don't have to start with pretty lines and perfect pose.

If you are starting, just like me, you can just paint a potatoman and sculpt it.

I feel quite confident with my upper muscles knowledge, but I still suck at visualising it.
You can see how much that anatomy blob changed from 3rd to 5th version.

6 and 7 are just coloring and line "sculpting".

8 and 9 introduced leg bones in simplified form, and you can see that I'm not that acknowledged with lower body anatomy.

Back muscles were drawn entirely from my head, where for the legs I had to use references few times. Especially in the knee area.
I was drawing it muscle by muscle, attaching one to the other, keeping in mind (sometimes even tracing with lighter lines) insertion points.

If someone's interested I had 4 layers in total.
One for the background, one for established steps, one for the sketch and one for colours.
Refining lines is just erasing the parts where I wanted muscles to show through and darkening the lines I was left with.
No tracing old lines on new layer. If I draw a line I have to commit to that. I can always Ctrl+z stuff till I'm happy.

If that helped, well... good for you.

Old Stuff 6

Hi again,

That's the second part of my post related to faces I've drawn in 2015.
The first part of 2015's you can find HERE.

So lets get started.
That guy I like. Really. I was in such a good mood when I was drawing that I don't even...
I was even more happy 'cause I was drawing all of that from imagination, but it didn't last for long...

Few days later I was again like that...

Or that...

Or that... Basically I can draw shit. I really can. The sad think is I have to be in a "zone". And that's why I want to more consistent.

That's the September 24th.
When It comes to painting - I've no traditional background beside my "kindergarten career" so most of the times I've no Idea what I'm doing.

And that's the 9th of November.
I'm sorry for "how to draw an owl tutorial" syndrome, but I've got just few layers that I saved.
It's still better than nothing, isn't it?

And these are "master studies" I did after watching Ahmed Aldoori YT video.
I just took all the measurements and painted it in my "own way" so I don't know if the "master studies" term is quite correct.

Any ways - lady on the right side of the canvas was "highly influenced :D" by THAT VERY VIDEO
I couldn't find that image on HIS DeviantArt, so I'm posting direct link to his YT to let you know it's not mine idea.

The lady on the left was painted in the same manner, but the one who painted the original piece is Charlie Bowater. I love her rough sketches and anatomy study drawings.
You can find HER DeviantArt profile here, or click here to see the original artwork.

Sorry for the long post.

Ogre dude

Surprise! I'm back!

Some time ago I said I'm working on my anatomy.

I decided, to upload one of my fuckups.

Believe or not - it's not about promoting YT channel. This video is not even public.
I just wanted to learn some basics of film editing (like cut, paste and "why the fuck it doesn't work?!"), so I recorded my "process" with OBS (Open Broadcaster Software), "edited" all the clips I had (9 in total) in Lightworks and that's the end result:

I don't know if I'll post anything like that any time soon, but I like the editing part, so that's quite possible.

Boring as hell and has unsatisfactory ending, but I've warned you it's fuckup.

Everything painted in Krita.

That's it,

Old Stuff 5

OK - Oldies time! (that sounds bad if you read that as Deadpool would...)

You've seen already some of 2015 stuff - but hey! I got shitload of this and don't have anything new (actively working on that).

That's the most early sketch I did in 2015.
If you struggle with drawing faces - draw masks. For unknown reason it's easier.
And oh my... that body anatomy, face structure...

That sketch I like :D

And here I was trying to figure out how the head attaches to the body - back then it seemed ok, but now I know it's way off.

Lots of doodles. You can easily see I'm afraid of drawing eyes. I mean it's haaaaard :(

Eyes from references. Lips from imagination.
Oh.. and trying do that cat mouth thingy :3

Trying to do a pirate profile. Like skin tones - don't like the rest.

Post gets long, so I'll split that.
I've got more than hundred of these, and I'm talking just about these which I named by the number...
The rest is like "girl_portrait_01_BW" or "asdfg".

I wish I was more organised back then.

Any way,

Thugs Face

Supp?

You've already had a chance to see that guy in my older post.
Now he's a bit more rendered. He' is basically test subject for my new blending technique.
Well... it's not that new, but I wasn't using it 'till now.

1. Quick sketch -> rough indication of facial features (as always) -> some basic shadows and...

2. ...the "fun" part. Putting broad strokes of values and smearing edges where the plain change is soft, and leaving hard edges, where the plain change is sudden.

3. I gave him an eye-patch, mostly because I'm too lazy to render the eye properly. I needed an excuse, so I scratch his face and left him with a scar. Also put him against the darker background to indicate some rim light coming from behind. Everything made in probably the most lazy way I could have even imagined - eyeballed and painted by the hand :D

4. Some value changes, bonus trapezius, some plain changes and I got bored.

The only reason of bringing that guy to this level was testing that paint&smear thingy'.

-values are off and stopped at 25% brightness;
-anatomy can't be called "spot-on" in any possible way;
-nothing is rendered to the presentable level (character nor the background);
-materials don't look like they should (leather is not leather, skin doesn't look like skin etc.).

I know what I did wrong - or rather what I didn't do at all and I'm totally fine with this.
I'm not capable of working on all mistakes I do at once, so I'll be working them one by one.
Right now I'm focusing on human body anatomy, so maybe somewhen in the future (certainly not the near future) I'll do recap of my anatomy fuckups.

Any way - have a good day.
